What do You Know of Thyroid Cancer
What is Cancer?
Cancer is an abnormal growth of cells in the body of the patient.
This growth of cells does not respond to the operations governing
the normal growth of cells but persists without taking into consideration
the needs of the body.
What is the Thyroid Gland?
The thyroid gland is located on both sides of the respiratory tract
below the larynx (in the shape of a butterfly the size of a chicken
egg). It warms the throat and is responsible for the secretion of
hormones that control growth, development and vital operations in
the human body.
Thyroid Cancer
The thyroid cancer is among the malignant diseases that attack children
and adults. It is spread in the state of Qatar among women ranging
between 20 to 50 years old. There is a 2% chance to contract thyroid
cancer than any other kind of cancers.
Formation of Tumors
The disease is represented by irregular quick disturbances and divisions
inside the nucleus because of a disturbance in the work of the genes
that control the division of cells and this leads to an abnormal
growth in a specific region of the human body. Cancer grows inside
the thyroid gland in the form of a hard rough knot that is capable
of invading the neighboring and faraway tissues through the blood
and lymphatic vessels. The tumor exerts pressure on the cells which
leads to their infection. This tumor is capable of forming material,
such as collagens, that have a negative effect on the rest of the
cells found in the body.
Types of Thyroid Cancer
* Papillary Carcinoma
This is the most common (60-70%) type of thyroid cancer. Women contract
it more than men (2-3 average). It is more malignant and faster
growing during old age and spreads via the lymphatic vessels.
* Folliculary Carcinoma
These are cells filled with a liquid. They make up 20% of thyroid
cancers. It is common among women especially in old age.
* Solid Medullary Carcinoma
This makes up 10% of thyroid cancers. It occurs in a familial or
individual manner and spreads malignantly through lymphatic nodes
and might spread to the liver, the lungs and the bones with thick
calcifications. Through cell screening Calcitonin producing C-cells
are discovered.
* Anaplastica Carcinoma
This makes up 5% of thyroid cancers. It occurs during old age and
is widely spread among women.
